In 1804 the nation of Haiti was born after a long fight for freedom, the man who had the idea and led the charge was Toussaint L'Ouverture (Translates to Toussaint The Opening. The opening meaning a way out of slavery to freedom) this was way before the abolish of slavery.
He made sure to galvanise all the people of that area to fight for freedom. All colonial powers who got in the way couldnt stop this self ordinance to freedom. But this post isnt so much about the history.
But the legacy, General Leclerc tricked Toussaint to go into a ship saying he would be treated as an equal and a treaty would be signed, however, when he got the ship he would realise quickly that this was a very duplicitous act. Toussaint was then eventually taken to the mountains Château de Joux, La Cluse-et-Mijoux and left to die of cold, freezing and starvation. Why because he wanted his people to be free. We are now but for believing that way back when, which was waaaaaaay before slavery was even abolished. He is a hero and a genius.

Frances country slogan is Liberty, Equality and Fraternity. In the name of that we need to embrace that start respecting his legacy and stop demonising his humble and righteous beliefs, his legacy and the nation.
Start by offering tours to the same mountain so that people in the diaspora and others who want to know about this legacy can enjoy it. You wont get anywhere covering it up doing that is being on the wrong side of history
